The Invacare Alber E-Motions are power assistive wheel adaptions designed to fit most self-propel wheelchairs providing the user with vastly improved power per push. The E-Motions, like the Alber Twions, were designed to bridge the gap between wheelchair and powerchair.

Alber’s E-Motions consist of motors built into the hub of each wheel which provide assistive effort in response to every push by the user. Sensors built into the rim detects user inputs and provides a boost, enabling users with poor upper body strength to self-propel with very little effort. Alber’s E-Motions are typically used by people with multiple sclerosis/ muscular dystrophy, tetraplegia, heart failure and shoulder degeneration, to name a few.

When compared to Alber’s Twions, the E-Motions are effectively the more capable big brother. Approaching twice the weight of Twions, E-Motions are more suitable for applications where they remain in-situ on the wheelchair (although they are removable via quick-release if required!). The increased weight is down to the bigger batteries, offering double the range of the Twions’, while the motors are also much more powerful (30 Nm equivalent of torque available, compared to the Twions’ 20Nm.)

The range of compatibility options is also wider with the E-Motions, meaning they work with an even greater range of self-propel wheelchairs than the Twions can and they have a maximum occupant weight of 130kg, compared to 120kg for the Twions. This can be increased to 180kg for a small upcharge.

There is also an increased level of technology available with the E-Motions, including rollback delay, adjustment for imbalanced user inputs and a user-control provided as standard. This remote control displays service and diagnostic information, battery condition, assistance levels and options to reprogram various parameters.

Just like any powered wheel or powerchair, it’s highly recommended you try them for yourself first to help gauge which products are best suited to your needs. If you’re interested in a demonstration (and trying them for yourself), please don’t hesitate to get in contact.
